The Bad

Below are the bad versions of foods to stay away from or eat in small amounts (where noted) when on the Paleo / Zone diet. (Cited: from THE PALEO DIET by Dr. Loren Cordain)

DAIRY:
No dairy items are permitted on the Paleo diet unless you are Vegetarian or are trying to bulk up using the CrossFit Football John Welbourne method. - ONLY RECOMMENDED UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES.

ALL
Including:
Quinoa
Buckwheat
Barley
Corn

Fat Pork Chops
Lean Lamb Chops
Pork Shoulder Roast
Ham Lunch Meat

Oils: - These are 'Bad' oils and should not be used at all because the ratio of Omega 6's to Omega 3's is too high. More info on The Omegas.

Almond Oil
Apricot Kernel Oil
Coconut Oil
Corn Oil
Coconut Oil - though this one has been heavily debated, according to the Weston A. Price Foundation
Coconut oil is 92% saturated with over two-thirds of the saturated fat in the form of medium-chain fatty acids (often called medium-chain triglycerides). Of particular interest is lauric acid, found in large quantities in both coconut oil and in mother's milk. This fatty acid has strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Coconut oil protects tropical populations from bacteria and fungus so prevalent in their food supply; as third-world nations in tropical areas have switched to polyunsaturated vegetable oils, the incidence of intestinal disorders and immune deficiency diseases has increased dramatically. Because coconut oil contains lauric acid, it is often used in baby formulas.
Cottonseed Oil
Grapeseed Oil
Hazelnut Oil
Oat Oil
Palm Oil
Peanut Oil
Rice Bran Oil
Safflower Oil
Sesame Oil
Soybean Oil
Sunflower Oil
Tomato Seed Oil
Wheat Germ Oil

Spices: If you are suffering from an AID (Auto Immune Disease) you should stay away from these:
Cayenne
Paprika
Other pepper based spices

Sweetners:
Agave Nectar
Stevia
Candy
Honey
Sugars

Veggies:
Potatoes (not including Yams or Sweet Potatoes)
Legumes - beans, peas, and peanuts included

  2. Coconut oil and Agave Nectar are the ones that I was surprised to see on this list.

  3. i was also surprised to see agave nectar..why is this not used? Ive seen many Paleo recipes use this ingredient...

  5. Oops - I'm just starting paleo and I thought legumes were OK. I had peanut butter, kidney beans and chick peas today. Well now I know!

  6. That' okay! Though they aren't paleo, they aren't the worst thing. Keep up the good work! Try some almond butter or sunflower seed butter - Delish! I found I like it even better than peanut butter!

  7. The BEST almond butter, albeit pricey, is the stuff from Whole Foods that is FRESHLY ground... Oh my goodness, I will never buy any other brand of almond butter, seriously!

  8. What about almond milk or coconut milk? Paleo or Non-Paleo?

  9. I thought Coconut Oil was ok (sparingly)? I thought it was in one of the first recipes in Robb Wolf's "The Paleo Solution" (one of the first meals, grilled salmon).

Honey has been hard to cut out. I dropped coffee cold turkey (w/o cream or sugar, I don't want to drink it), so I picked up tea. I'm on Day 10 of eating the Paleo way & I have been slowly weaning myself off of honey. I switched over to raw honey over the weekend & have been cutting back on it, slowly but surely.

Thanks! This is a really, really useful site. :)

  10. Almonds are Paleo, so can almond milk be a substitute for almonds? Coconuts are a fruit, so you would think these would both be good drinks and Paleo.

  11. Palm oil is interesting - I have family in Nigeria where it is virtually the only cooking oil used, with great dietary benefits. I think the difference is in the processing - palm oil in Nigeria is thick, cloudy, and bright red, with a distinct aroma. US/first world palm oil is clear, colorless, and odorless, completely "refined" of any naturally occurring complementary ingredients. Just sayin'...

  12. what are your thoughts on chia seeds? I have heard that they are a great source of energy but I am not sure whether they are classified as paleo or not.

  13. since when is coconut oil and palm oil NOT paleo?

    ReplyDelete
  14. What's so bad about stevia? It's totally natural and has zero fat and calories. Hmmm...

  15. Yeah getting a little confused with what is paleo and non paleo, thought coconut oil was OK and paleo now surprised to see it isn't. Also why is stevia not paleo? Please can someone answer?
