The average American person gets 15 grams of fiber per day, whereas the recommended level is about 25 to 35 grams per day.
Over and over when I explain the Paleo Diet to people, they ask, “But don’t you need to eat whole grains for the fiber?” What these people aren't aware of is that grains have nowhere near the fiber that fruits and vegetables have.
Below lists the average total fiber content in a 1,000 calorie serving of several foods:
Refined cereals – 6 grams
Whole grain cereals – 24 grams
Fruits – 41 grams
Nonstarchy vegetables – 185 grams
As you can see, fruits and especially vegetables pack a serious punch (of fiber that is)! And we all know how important fiber is for our digestion. It also has positive effects on blood chemistry and can help prevent varicose veins, hemorrhoids, hiatal hernia, and illnesses associated with the gastrointestinal tract.

We all “know” how important fibre is for digestion.
ReplyDeleteI am starting to experiment with “no fibre” approach now!
Yes, I know, you might be shocked now, I was as well a week ego.
This was a game changer for me http://www.carnivorehealth.com/main/2009/4/17/screw-you-fiber.html
So far, I feel better when I eat less than 10-15g of fibre a day. When i get over 20, things somehow get worse. I haven’t done sever low fibre days in succession yet, but I am sure motivated to do so. Try it for yourself at your own risk.
Thank you for that information Radek. The information from the webpage you cited makes sense at first glance. I will definitely be doing some further investigation into this topic. I am wondering if you have any information on whether a protein/fat diet is lacking in important minerals/nutrients that may be supplied by fruits and vegetables.
ReplyDeleteI don't know yet, I am still eating very Paleo, just starting to fiddle with fiber. But you can try to take Fitday or some other diet planning program, create a sample diet and look at the mineral/vitamin deficiencies there.
