Cashews: Paleo or not?

I have heard the question multiple times: Are cashews paleo or not? Several purported paleo diet websites I've visited dispute their status as paleo. But here's some information you may found reassuring:

The true fruit of the cashew tree is a kidney or boxing-glove shaped drupe that grows at the end of the pseudofruit. The drupe develops first on the tree, and then the peduncle expands into the pseudofruit. Within the true fruit is a single seed, the cashew nut. Although a nut in the culinary sense, in the botanical sense the fruit of the cashew is a seed. (from Wikipedia)

So whether we classify the cashew as a nut or a seed, it IS paleo. So enjoy those cashews without worry, paleoites!

This article suggests that they are cased in toxins which makes it difficult for me to believe that they would be healthy. I don't see how it's any different than potatoes having lectins in them and they aren't paleo.

  2. Robb Wolf says that the seed, being the reproductive unit of the plant, is covered in toxins meant to employ the body to get "planted" by feces. This immunotoxin causes inflammation of the digestive tract, which inhibits nutrient digestion via mucus and a breakdown in the gateways that break them down.

Robb Wolf has stated the cashews are NOT paleo.

  3. Thanks for all the news on the paleo diet...it is a benefit that most nuts are allowed which re delicious and also gift the required energies.

  4. Cashews are related to poison ivy (botanically speaking), and unless properly roasted the phenols within the shells can cause skin irritation. Mangoes and pistachios are in the same family (Anacardiaceae) as cashews, and if those are allowed on the paleo diet I don't see why cashews would be a problem. I am in the process of researching the Paleo diet, and the problem with cashews has been something I've been trying to find an answer to.

  5. If you check Robb Wolf's Paleo shopping list on his website and in the Paleo Solution he lists cashews as an acceptable food so I'll assume they are Paleo approved. Robb's the man!!

  7. I'm sorry, but I find it difficult to go on just one man. Granted, Rob has a lot of science to back him up, but as I said before, he's just one man. The mark of proper research is that you have several credible sources you can site to uphold your views. Please don't ever take just one person's word as gospel, however believable they may be. Always find out for yourself what is true, research what these people say, so when people question your answers you can back yourself up

  8. You've made some good points there. I looked on the internet for more info about the issue and found most people will go along with your views on this website.
